An immersive 5-day educational experience in our nation's capital
The Washington Workshop is a premier civic education program that brings 8th grade students from across the country to Washington D.C. for an immersive, hands-on learning experience about American government and history.
Unlike a typical field trip, this program goes beyond sightseeing. We'll have special access to government buildings, meet with our elected representatives, participate in mock congressional sessions, and learn from experts about how our democracy works.
The program is run by the Close Up Foundation, which has been providing civic education experiences for over 50 years. They believe that informed, engaged citizens are essential to a healthy democracy - and I couldn't agree more!

Understanding how the three branches of government work together and check each other's powers.
Learning the importance of being an informed, engaged citizen in our democracy.
Experiencing firsthand the sites where American history was made and continues to unfold.
Seeing how laws are made, debated, and passed through our democratic system.
"I've always been interested in how our government works, but reading about it in a textbook is completely different from experiencing it in person. I want to see where laws are made, meet the people who represent us, and understand how I can make a difference as a citizen."
This trip isn't just about sightseeing - it's about becoming an informed, engaged citizen. I want to understand how our democracy works so I can participate in it effectively.
Plus, this will be an incredible opportunity to bond with my classmates, challenge myself by traveling without my parents, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
The Washington Workshop is organized by Close Up Foundation, a non-partisan civic education organization that has been bringing students to Washington D.C. since 1971.
Our school group will have about 30 students from our grade. Throughout the week, we'll also interact with students from other schools across the country.
Yes! Teachers and chaperones from our school will accompany us the entire trip. The Close Up Foundation also provides experienced program instructors.
Unlike a typical tourist visit, the Washington Workshop includes behind-the-scenes access, meetings with elected officials, educational workshops, and structured learning activities that bring civics textbooks to life.
The cost covers round-trip airfare, 5 nights accommodation, all meals, program fees, admission to sites, transportation in D.C., and educational materials. It's actually a great value for everything included!
